Leadeth

He leadeth me! O blessed thought!
Oh words with heavenly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be,
Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

He leadeth me! He leadeth me!
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful follower I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.

Sometimes ‘mid scenes of deepest gloom,
Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom,
By waters calm, o’er troubled sea,
Still ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine;
Nor ever murmur nor repine;
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

And when my task on earth is done,
When, by Thy grace, the victory’s won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
Since Thou through Jordan leadeth me.

Hymn, “He Leadeth Me” by Joseph H. Gilmore, 1834-1918

  1. My friend and I have been discussing off and on, the old hymns we grew up with – what faith builders they are and how much comfort they bring when we hear them. Thank you for posting this one – balm for the soul…
